Metro Justice Distributes “No Iraq War” Signs in Rush Hour Traffic
By Elaine Russell, Rochester Indymedia
(March 5, 2003) About 12 volunteers distributed over 100 “No Iraq War” signs during the evening rush hour, braving the cold weather. This contingent of activists included high school students and grandmothers. They offered the signs to motorists stopped at the busy intersection of Broadway and South Goodman St. A row of signs were displayed in front of the picturesque Community Garden.
Metro Justice Organizer Jon Greenbaum said the response from drivers ranged from most staring straight ahead, many supportive to a few obscene gestures. Three police cars drove by and stopped, but there was no conversation with them.
“You get a lot of people who want to stop the war and voice their opposition. A casual action like this offers a chance to take a stand and have fun. This will be a one-term presidency. Bush will have discredited the neo-conservative agenda in the process,” Greenbaum commented.
County Legislator Bill Benet was present for this event. In an interview he stated, ”If we want peace abroad and to bring an end to terrorism, we can’t be a bully to the world. We need to bring together those allies who we are alienating. I’m not excusing terrorism, but this war will bring more terrorism.” Benet was one of the sponsors of the anti-war resolution in the Monroe County Legislature.
