In Memory Of the Reverend, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

At the invitation of the leadership of Spiritus Christi Church, I delivered the following message during Mass on January 13 and 14, 2007.
Good Morning,
I thank Mother Mary, Father Jim, Ms. Myra Brown, and this great congregation for inviting me. I feel
honored to have been invited, and I am truly humbled. I would like to attempt to discuss the essence of the
Reverend, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s life (in 15 or 20 minutes), which is nearly impossible to do, but I’ll
try. It is difficult to write or say something about Dr. King that hasn’t already been written or said. Real,
true, objective, authentic greatness needs no interpretation. It is, what it is, and speaks loudly and clearly
for itself. Yet, it is befitting and important that we continue to pay tribute and homage, and give reverence
to truly unique, outstanding, and divinely inspired human beings --- such as the Reverend, Dr. Martin
Luther King Jr. In my humble view, the greatest tribute or demonstration of our love for Dr. King is
manifested in our willingness to help continue the work that he literally sacrificed his life for. Namely, that
is the pursuit of freedom, justice, and equality for all human beings. I believe that we would agree that in
the United States of America, we have not arrived at a state, in which Dr. King’s 4 grown children and/or
his grandchildren, “live in a nation in which they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the
content of their character.†We have not arrived at a state, in which “justice rolls down like waters, and
righteousness like a mighty stream†--- and Dr. King said that he would not be satisfied until that condition
exists. So obviously, there is still much work to be done. I also think that it is important for us to be very
careful as we teach about the life and times of Dr. King. This is especially important for our youth. [Click
