5 Years of Torture; Close Guantanamo Now! Protest to end the unlawful practice of holding prisoners without due process at Guantanamo Bay.
*At least 45 detainees died in U.S. custody to confirmed or suspected criminal homicides. At least 8 people were tortured to death. At least 98 detainees have died while in U.S. custody in Iraq or Afgahnistan.
*around 500 people from 35 countries continue to be held without charge or trial as of January 2006, four years after the Bush administration began locking up prisoners at Guantanamo Bay.
*The U.N. Commision on Human Rights, in a report of February 2006, stated that "the legal rigime applied to these detainees seriously undermines the rule of law and a number of fundamental universally recognized human rights, which are the essence of democratic societies," and concludes that "The United Stated Government should close the Guantanamo Bay detention facilities without further delay."
Protest begins 4:30 PM, Federal Building, Rochester NY, march to Main and State. Wear orange if you've got it! Street theater, G.B. cage, stats, opportunity to remember those who've died at Guantanamo as well as send seeds to detainees.
