This evening the Jewish Community Center hosted a performance of a contemporary adaptation of Lysistrata by Drue Robinson Hagan featuring some of the area's most prominent talent.

Theater groups are speaking with one voice with an international wave of performances of Lysistrata, by Aristophanes. In this classic Greek comedy, women on both sides of a war effectively stop it by occupying the Treasury to cut off money for war and then implementing a strike where they abstained from sex until the men negotiated a peace agreement. According to the project's website, as of this morning there have been 1004 readings in 59 countries.

This performance was staged by Director Vicki Duval and Coordinator Linda Starkweather, both with the BOCES School for the Performing Arts, a cutting-edge theater project. In her introductory remarks Ms. Starkweather commended the members of the audeince for their courage to attend. “This is art. It is a safe place for all views to be heard.” She referred to the worldwide participation in this project as a community uniting people all over the world.

Actress Sandi Henschel portrayed Lysistrata with strength and conviction. The entire cast of 27 delivered the comedy so skillfully that the audience left with a big smile. Much of the script involved bantering between the men and women; even that was resolved delightfully in the end. We were left with the vision of a greater world, given the right leadership.

In a later interview Ms. Starkweather expressed concern for the public’s fear to express dissenting views. “We’re on the cutting edge of telling the truth. The truth is always dangerous. One thing harder that telling the truth is hearing the truth being spoken. Art is once removed from reality.” She saw this comedy as a means to present this truth in a palatable manner and that part of humor is recognition.

Director Vicki Duval agreed that everyone is searching for a way to have a voice in the community. “This play is over 2000 years old, yet the same issues are still there. Art is always a way to organize chaos. It can lead us to agree to investigate the subject matter.”

Ms. Starkweather was carrying a quotation that would give courage to even the most reticent to speak out against a formidable regime:
“The people can always be brought to do the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you do is tell them they are being attacked and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism.”
-Hermann Goring, Nazi Reichminister

Earlier in today’s news, the Bush administration criticized the Turkish government for not containing the public dissent that lead to the vote excluding U.S. troops from use of their country for military aggression against Iraq.

For more information visit www.lysistrataproject.org
