Cop Crashes Activist Meeting
By Elaine Russell, Rochester Indymedia
(February 20, 2003) During a planning meeting for the next city anti-war demonstration, a male sitting in the back of the room introduced himself as a police officer. In a loud voice and intimidating demeanor the cop warned the activists about not having a permit and not including the cops in the planning. The meeting had been in progress for about half an hour before he identified himself. He was wearing aviator glasses and Sears casual wear.
Responses to the cop ranged from confrontation to coddling. Then the cop asked if the facilitator wanted him to leave, as if to put him on the defensive. The facilitator did not take the bait.
The meeting took place at a Catholic Worker House where police involvement is usually avoided as a matter of policy.
