Dear activist, I have been talking with a number of other people who have discovered that the government is spying on them and we are planning a local impeachment hearing here in Tucson. We thought other cities might want to join us. Please let us know if you are interested. Thanks Keith McHenry Co-founder of Food Not Bombs IF YOU THINK BUSH SPIED ON YOU TESTIFIY AT THE PEOPLE’S IMPEACHMENT HEARINGS AND DEFEND FREE SPEECH Watergate Hearings - May 17, 1973 The People’s Hearings MAY 17, 2006 ILLEGAL DOMESTIC SPYING IS ALWAYS AN IMPEACHABLE OFFENCE Stand Up for First Amendment and join the people’s impeachment hearings in your community on the anniversary of Nixon’s impeachment hearings in 1973. We can’t wait for Congress. TESTIFY AT THE PEOPLE’S IMPEACHMENT HEARINGS ON SPYING WEDNESDAY, MAY 17, 2006 Look for the time and location of the hearing in your community on our website. Add your communities hearing to the list. Are peace activist terrorists or has George W. Bush committed high crimes and misdemeanors? If the Bush Administration has targeted you or your group please join us and hold impeachment hearings in your community. "The government's message has been 'trust us - we're only spying on terrorists and if you've done nothing wrong, you have nothing to fear,'" stated Michigan Peaceworks' program coordinator Joseph Kuilema. "But obviously, since they're also spying on law-abiding peace activists, that message is not true. The Bush Administration has betrayed our trust." DAS JA VU - The Watergate Hearings that lead to Nixon’s impeachment began on May 17, 1973. The Watergate Hearings investigated a series of events, spanning from 1972 to 1974, which started with the U.S. President Richard Nixon's abuse of power with the goal of undermining political opposition in the peace movement and the Democratic Party. Sound familiar? The Bush administration admits it has wiretapped domestic phone calls with out getting a warrant as required by law. The Pentagon’s TALON program infiltrated and spied on over 1,500 anti-war protests in 2004 listing many of these lawful actions as “credible - ongoing - terrorist - threats.†Every month the ACLU and other civil liberties groups discover new evidence of illegal domestic spying on groups working for peace, the environment, civil rights and animal welfare organizations. Richard Nixon resigned when the Watergate Hearings exposed the president’s illegal surveillance. George Bush may have out done Nixon by ordering the NSA to monitor tens of thousands of phone calls to law-abiding Americans with out warrants. You may have been spied on and false information may have been added to government files. COINTELPRO? The Food Not Bombs case is one of the latest in a series of revelations of government using allegations of terrorism to justify surveillance of peaceful social change organizations, such as the American Friends Service Committee in Denver, Colorado; Patriots for Peace in Melbourne, Florida; and Merton Center. It raises fears among free-speech advocates that the Bush Administration may be initiating a modern-day version of COINTELPRO (short for Counterintelligence Program) - the secret FBI operation in the 1960s and 1970s that gathered information on and attempted to destroy the anti-Vietnam War movement, the civil rights movement, and its leaders (most notably Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.). "Since when did feeding the homeless become a terrorist activity?" asked ACLU Associate Legal Director Ann Beeson. "When the FBI and local law enforcement target groups like [Colorado-based] Food Not Bombs under the guise of fighting terrorism, many Americans who oppose government policies will be discouraged from speaking out and exercising their rights." Join us in holding the peoples impeachment hearings. Look for the time and location of the hearing in your community on our website or add your communities hearing to the list.
