 The Bill of Rights Defense Commitee of Monroe County opposes The USA Patriot Act. Asks Rochester area candidates to support Civil Liberties Resolutions. (see: MonroeBORDC.com)  11/2005Â TenÂ Rochester area candidates received the endorsement of a local civil liberties group today. The Monroe County Bill of Rights Defense Committee (MonroeBORDC) is asking local governments to join the 7 states and nearly 400 US cities, towns, and county legislatures which have passed resolutions critical of the USA Patriot Act. In a letter to area candidates Monroe BORDC says â€œWe believe (The Patriot Act) was enacted in haste, and without due consideration of its effects on our democracy. We strongly object to this Act and to other laws and executive orders which undermine the protections of The Bill of Rights and the civil liberties which the Founders so wisely enshrined in our Constitution. â€¦We ask that you supportâ€¦ a Resolution on Civil Liberties in your town councils, the City of Rochester, and the Monroe County Legislature, and that you invite public discussion of this issue in open session.â€ BORDC spokesman Lee Price added â€œThe protection of civil rights and civil liberties is essential to the well being of a free and democratic society. We see no inherent conflict between national security and the preservation of liberty. We think Americans can be both safe and free.
