The FUA (From Up Above/Famous Urban Artists) crew will be
hosting a two-day graffiti jam at the Village Gate Square and
on the corner of N. Clinton and Clifford Avenue. FUA affiliate
artists will be painting the east side (the back) of the Village
Gate Square @ 274 N. Goodman St from 10am to 6pm this
Saturday the 9th. The FUA crew willÂ
be painting Clinton Liquors and another business on the N. Clinton & Clifford Avenue corner Sunday July 10th from 10a
m to 6pm. Dave Ratigan and other FUA graffiti artists will be
available to meet with media representatives and community
members on Saturday or Sunday at noon at the respective
locations.
The FUA crew is a national association of graffiti artists based
out of Rochester, New York. Currently a 30 person crew, the
FUA crew has approximately 20 serious local artists and 10
national artists. Established in 1989, the FUA began with a 50
artist membership. Graffiti crews have traditionally provided an
artistic expression opportunity for young people as an
alternative to violence and crime. FUA founder, Dave Ratigan
said, “Graffiti crews are similar to street gangs, but we battle
by competitively creating graffiti, as opposed to physically
fighting or shooting each other.†Most recently, the FUA crew
spray painted a mural on the Bob Duffy Mayoral Campaign
Headquarters on St. Paul Street (near the St. Paul/Hart Street
intersection).
