Rochester Civil Liberties Group Fights Patriot Act

The Bill of Rights Defense Committee of Monroe County has issued a Petition asking local governments and candidates to pass Resolutions objecting to the USA Patriot Act and to call for a restoration of civil liberties in America. The Petition may be signed by persons living or working in Monroe County. The BORDC is also seeking the endorsement of groups, organizations, churches and businesses in the Rochester area.

An Open Letter on Civil Liberties

Dear Legislator:

So far, seven states and more than 380 communities in the
United States/>/>, including 25 governments here in
New York/> 
State/>/> have enacted Resolutions critical of the U.S.A. Patriot Act (Public Law 107-56).  We believe this law was enacted in haste, and without due consideration of its effects on our democracy.  We strongly object to this Act and to other laws and executive orders which undermine the protections of The Bill of Rights

and the civil liberties which the Founders so wisely enshrined in our Constitution.

We call upon you, our village, town, city, and county representatives, to reaffirm your commitment to those freedoms, rights, and civil liberties protected by the Constitutions of the
United States/>/> and the State of New York.

We ask that you examine the merits of the Resolutions on this issue already passed by the governments of:
