Sprawl and our 'Thinning Metroplis': Causes, Consequences & Solutions
Primary tabs
The Green Party of Monroe County's Guest Speaker for their May 9th monthly meeting will be Evan Lowenstein of Green Village Consulting. He will be leading a discussion on urban sprawl. The address is 179 Atlantic Avenue and the talk begins at 7pm.
During the 1990's, land in Upstate New York was developed at a rate twenty times greater than the rate of population growth. This "thinning" phenomenon created a host of economic, environmental, social and aesthetic problems in all upstate regions.
Why is this pattern occuring? What are the consequences? What can and should we do to stop it? What should we do differently now and in the future with regard to land use and development? What are the barriers to the success of "smart growth" here, and how do we overcome those barriers?
Evan Lowenstein has recently formed Green Village Consulting, through which he works to advance the local and national quests for sustainable development, smart growth and environmental protection.
The discussion will be part of the Green Party of Monroe County's monthly meeting and will take place on Monday, May 9th at 7pm at 179 Atlantic Avenue. The meeting is free and open to the public.
