On Sunday, March 13, 2005, Rochester-area disability rights activist Chris Hilderbrant will formally announce his entry into the race for County Legislature. The announcement will take place among family and friends, as well as neighbors and small business owners from the 6th Legislative District. The campaign kick-off will be held at Northgate Plaza, 3800 Dewey Avenue. Supporters will gather by 12:15 p.m. and the announcement will start at 12:30 p.m. Following the announcement, Hilderbrant and his supporters will have lunch at a locally owned restaurant in one of many efforts to revitalize small business in the district. <!--break--> Local Activist to Announce Campaign for County Legislature Hilderbrant lives on Southampton Drive in the 6th Legislative District, with his wife and 18 month old daughter. Prior to becoming a homeowner in Greece, he resided in the Charlotte area of LD6 for three years. He will be competing for the seat currently held by Fred Amato, a term-limited Democrat. Hilderbrant is a registered Green and is actively seeking the endorsement of the Democrat, Independence and Working Families parties. The date of this announcement is of particular significance to Hilderbrant. On March 13, 1990, at 14 years old he broke his neck in a diving accident, seriously damaging his spinal cord. Hilderbrant indicates that the adversity he has faced and the barriers he has overcome since that date have made him a stronger, more mature person than he ever would have been. “Disability is a challenge, but it has helped me develop more character, perspective, endurance, passion, drive and commitment than I could have without this challenge.†stated Hilderbrant. Referring to March 13, Hilderbrant continued “I believe this is an excellent day to begin this run for office. The challenges our county and our neighborhoods face right now, when overcome, will enable us to create a stronger community. With strong leadership and determination to break the status quo that has misguided our government, we will again have a thriving neighborhood. I can provide that leadership and we can revitalize Eastern Greece and Charlotte.†Hilderbrant has worked for six years at the Center for Disability Rights. During that time, he has emerged as an energetic, effective and passionate leader for the disability community. He is currently the Director of Advocacy at the Center for Disability Rights, a position he has held for the past two years. During the past three years, Hilderbrant and his colleagues at the Center for Disability Rights are proud to have been the driving force behind passage of two statewide laws that will provide better service for people with disabilities and the elderly, while also saving taxpayer money. Hilderbrant was born and raised in Dansville, New York and moved to Rochester when he began college in 1994. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in sociology from Nazareth College where he graduated Magna Cum Laude in 1999.
