Our friend and long time resident in the homeless community, JJ, is gone. His death was unnecessary and senseless. For those of us who have formed a community on the Emergency Warming Station bus, he will be missed. He was not only a regular guest on our bus, but he often helped us with the setup process during nightly operations. JJ, like all our guests, was homeless. And so often the homeless are victims of violence. He like the others desired a home. We could only offer a bed on our bus each night. Everyone should have a home to go to: A place to sleep; a place to call their own. We hope that someday all Rochester’s homeless will have housing. Until then, we will continue to provide for them a bed on our bus, but a bus is not a home. To ensure that they have housing will require the efforts of all of our community. Because they are our friends, family, and loved ones, they deserve our best.
