A Seat At The Table For EVERYBODY
Poverty is the leading cause of violence. More than one third of children in Rochester live in poverty. Eighty nine percent of the kids in the Rochester City Schools receive free or reduced lunch. The unemployment rate for African-Americans in the area is 11% (2000 census) and over a quarter of the black households were struggling under the poverty line. If you were to overlay a map showing the homocides in this county over the areas with the densest poverty you'd see a near perfect correlation.
Meanwhile, the Bush administration is poised to spend $200 billion to bomb Iraq. Our federal budget will be further challenged by the Bush tax cut -- a deal totalling $1.3 trillion that has already plunged our nation into deficit. The wealthiest 1% of Americans will receive the lion's share of the tax cut. In New York, municipalities are cutting services, straining to deal with a budget shortfall, due in large part to George Pataki's tax cut which denied $12 billion in revenue to the State. Moreover, New York State has cut its top personal income tax rate by more than 50% over the last 25 years.
At last week's Monroe County Legislature meeting the legislators passed the Altreya proposal without comment or discussion. The Altreya proposal calls saving $15 million by denying services at DSS to 5000 area residents. Even the D&C has questioned Altreya's bogus cost saving numbers. Layoffs are back in the news and a double dip recession is a foregone conclusion.
