Transfered from old site YEMEN

U.S. Assassinates Six People

On Sunday, November 3, the U.S. unleashed a missile that obliterated a car in Yemen, instantly killing six people. The U.S. claims all six were only suspected of acts of terrorism or being linked to terrorists. None had been convicted of any terrorist crime. One, reportedly connected to al-Qaida, had already been under surveillance for months by the U.S. and Yemen, according to officials. He could readily have been arrested and then tried. Instead, the car in which he was said to be driving, along with five others, was blown up by the CIA. According to news reports, one of the remaining five may also be an American. None of the identities of the six have been confirmed by Yemeni officials.

Secretary of Defense Rumsfeld said one of the individuals was "a suspected terrorist connected to the USS Cole. So it would be a very good thing if he were out of business." Continuing in this vein, Deputy Secretary of Defense Wolfowitz, in an interview with CNN, made clear the U.S. readiness to take similar action, anywhere, anytime. "This is a worldwide struggle. It’s going to take a long time to root these people out and to eliminate the source of support." He termed the assassinations a "very successful tactical operation." He repeated the U.S. view that "there are al-Qaida in some 90 different countries, including here in the United States."

Asked if he thought Southeast Asia would become the "second front" in the war on terrorism, Wolfowitz said, "Second of how many? Seven, eight? The United States is probably the first front. I know what they actually mean is it’s second after Afghanistan. That’s very misleading, I think. I don’t want to start nominating other countries; we’ve seen a problem in Yemen just now. But it is a huge mistake to think that this is a problem that is isolated to one or two principal fronts, or one or two principal countries. It’s a global problem. And not only do you go after it everywhere, but when you have success in one place it can lead to success in other places." He added that the U.S. considers al-Qaida similar to "a cancer" that is spreading. "It’s not something where you just cut off the head and the organization withers. It’s cells all over the place, cells with connections with other cells, terrorist groups with connections to other groups. Many different governments, terrorist-supporting governments, that play a game of help of one kind and disowning them in other ways." He reiterated statements by Bush and Rumsfeld that "we may be at this for a very long time" and that the U.S. aims to "change the whole world climate" in order to deal with what it calls terrorism.

When asked how U.S. actions were any different than Israeli assassinations of Palestinians, the Defense Department spokesperson said, "A lot of different things come into play here." Illustrating the "security" gained by the operation, the U.S. Embassy in Yemen was closed and protection of the building increased.

From USMLO website: http://www.usmlo.org/index.html
