Nonviolent direct action
has always been a cornerstone of the movement to close the SOA. Thousands
have risked prison by crossing the line onto Ft. Benning, carrying forward
the memories of those who have died at the hands of SOA graduates. This
courageous witness has propelled the movement forward and inspired thousands
more to join the struggle.
Each year the army tries new strategies to suppress the power of this
witness. Time and time again, this movement has shown that the voice of
truth cannot be silenced, not by the threat of prosecution, not by the
construction of a barbed-wire fence across the entrance to the base. As we
prepare to gather once again at the gates of Ft. Benning, SOA Watch calls on
individuals and communities across the country to discern carefully and
continue the tradition of crossing the line. The scenario will allow for
individuals and affinity groups to cross the line with the solemn funeral
procession or as part of an autonomous affinity group action.

A detailed risk assessment will be provided to aid in discerning your
level of involvement. It is not necessary to be part of an existing affinity
group to join in the action. At the direct action coordinating meetings
there will be opportunities for individuals to join groups and for affinity
groups to plug into the overall scenario.

LEGISLATIVE ACTION:

As you organize in your communities and prepare busloads of folks to
come to the November vigil at Ft. Benning, make lobbying an essential
component. Always have a suggested action at events. Use the postcards that
are available in the current SOA Watch newsletter or on the SOA Watch web
site.
Copy the postcard text onto cardstock and ask your co-workers,
classmates, fellow parishioners, etc. to sign it!

Also- it's not too late to invite your Member of Congress to speak on
the stage. To download a sample letter inviting them to speak at the Close
the SOA! vigil click here http://www.soaw.org/new/article.php?id=447 .

Finally, when you arrive in Ft. Benning this year, we will be using the
vigil as the kick-off for our legislative efforts of the 108th Congress. We
want ALL Members of Congress, especially the new ones, to receive "Greetings
from Ft. Benning" postcards from their constituents. Look for the SOA Watch
resource tables and listen for announcements to find out how you can sign a
postcard on the spot and have it sent right to your Member of Congress. Your
presence in Ft. Benning is impressive to Congress, it lets them know how
important the issue is to you and to all of us!

SOA Watch
PO Box 4566
Washington, DC 20017
phone: (202) 234 3440
email: info@soaw.org
web: www.soaw.org

========================================================================
END
