A quarter-page Ap story run by the D&C in Sundays paper gave the left a nod in it's final paragraph.
i unfortunatly could not find the story online to post, so you'll have to procure your own.
D&C Sunday may 30, 2004 p.17A
the title proudly read "Summit condemns iraqi inmate abuse," the story however was more about the inter summit drama between countries than iraqi abhorations. infact the subject was most likely mentioned to give relevance to the bumps it put in the whole "Summit". An event, between EU officials and several latin american countries, to strengthen international ties with and for the United Nations. the story foused mainly on the dissenting views about the current US international policies.
though cloudy on the specifics of the summit, the article did mention that said summit ended in a 104 point document signed by summit leaders and apparently mentions abhorations and no specific names.
according to the article this upset cuba and cuba made it's feelings known; "likening the EU to a 'flock of sheep, subordinate to Washington.'"
this along with it's retort delivered from the European Commission president served very nicely as a climax to the story.
the end of the story read as such:
"Cuba was not the only one at the summit with complaints.
Hundreds of anti- globalization protesters clashed briefly with police outside the summit for two days but were dispersed finally on friday by pounding afternoon rains and volleys of tear gas.
Dozens were arrested."
It's like a soap opera with a juicy plot twist and no plan for further episodes. They couldn't just leave it out? or write a better story? I guess it was just too easy and comfortable and rainy and intense at that summit to go get an actual story; to do any actual work. im just sad that the D&C has to live this one story tarnishing it's record. Oh well, they're probably used to it by now.
