Rome Celli, former treasurer of the Green Party of Monroe County (GPoMC), was elected to the Brighton Central School District Board of Education in May of this year. By winning he became the first Green to win office in Monroe County history.
In addition to running for office, Celli is a longtime real estate broker; president of the Roselawn Neighborhood Association in Brighton; president of the board of directors of the Center for Youth Services, Inc; and member of the board of directors of the Abundance Cooperative Market, Inc. He will begin his three year term on the Brighton school board in July.
GPoMC's strategic plan calls for running local Greens in local races on local issues. By focusing on local issues Greens can have a direct and immediate impact on every neighborhood in our community. Green issues are all around us. As more and more Greens turn their attention to their own neighborhoods they become natural leaders on the road to electoral success. Some Greens are seeking serveice on citizen boards (zoning, planning, conservation, etc.) within their town or village. Other Greens are building neighborhood groups and tenants' rights groups. Still others are taking an active role in urban issues like the development plans for the proposed bus terminal in downtown Rochester.
The GPoMC motto is, "Something to beliveve in. Someone to vote for." Celli's historic first electoral victory provides a model for local Greens to change the course of history in our community. The time to get active right in your own neighborhood is now! Rome Celli will present his ideas on this topic at an upcoming special Green Party meeting.
