The Sequatchie Valley Institute Hosts Natural Building Workshop
Whitwell, TN – The Sequatchie Valley Institute at Moonshadow, a non-profit organization, will host its 3rd annual Natural Building Workshop June 18th – 27th. Participants will have the opportunity to learn about natural building techniques through hands-on workshops. The workshop cost is $650 with work trade and scholarships available. Limited space is available and you must register to attend.
This 10-day intensive natural building workshop will include instructions on cob, adobe, timber-framing, natural plasters, bamboo, ferro-cement, stained glass, and more. Learn how to build a natural, affordable, long-lasting and beautiful home with materials from the land itself. Materials used include sustainably harvested wood and locally salvaged supplies from the nearby town that would otherwise be headed for the landfill. Participants will go through the entire process of building a natural structure by working on current projects at Moonshadow.
Through hands-on practices, demonstrations, classes, slideshows and discussions, participants will learn organic techniques for building a home, from beginning to end. This training is for people who are seriously interested in taking what they learn back home and putting it to use. The intention of SVI for this workshop is to see the efforts multiply by broadening the sustainable living and natural building movement.
The mission of the Sequatchie Valley Institute is to offer society an opportunity to experience and learn about living in harmony with nature by providing education, art, and research opportunities, a progressive, dynamic model residence and learning center; land conservation and restoration, and a vision for attaining a sustainable future. SVI is a 30-year-old, 330 acre, 4-generation family homestead in the mountains of rural Tennessee.
SVI will also host its 6th annual Food For Life workshop July 8th-11th. This sixth annual comprehensive food conference includes skill-building workshops as well as discussion-oriented political dialogues. Participants will learn various food preservation strategies including canning, fermentation, as well as different methods of cooking and diet choices, macrobiotics, health and nutrition. Workshops on edible and medicinal plants, seed saving, permaculture, biodynamic and organic gardening practices will be offered.
