This is the second in a series of columns that will analyze the state of humankind from the bottom up appearing this month on Niagara Buzz. The first piece, "Lockport or Lostport?," analyzes the condition of my beloved home town.
Niagara County, which played a central role in our nation’s alleged “victories” in World War II and the cold war, has been sacrificed on the altar of the military-industrial complex, whose blood-stained, radioactive profits haunt us now and for generations to come.
Moving away isn’t the answer, as dilution isn’t the solution to pollution. When one carries the genetic damage of radiation poisoning in their bodies, the mutated genes can metastasize wherever one resides. Furthermore, our bodies may be more radioactive than those of human beings elsewhere. The diaspora of Niagara County residents since the 1960s is literally the fallout of the bomb that fell here. Wherever the ashes fall, a risk is run that they will make others sick and/or produce babies with birth defects. Niagara County residents need to recognize the startling possibility that they themselves are pollution.
