House of Mercy Needs Your help <!--break--> Not much time has passed since Charles (C.W.) Earlsey was shot at the House of Mercy and the community is still trying to adjust to life without him. He is currently still in intensive care but is showing signs of improvement. C.W. is an integral part of the inner workings of the House of Mercy. This is a special place, it warmly opens its doors to all, turning none away. While other shelters require strict guidelines, religious observances, and curfews, the people here refuse to let a person freeze to death. Talk to anyone in the Hudson Ave. neighborhood and they can relate the importance of this man to the area. At the House of Mercy, C.W. plays a large role in the daily operation of the shelter and his loss is taxing the shelter to its limits. This is a particularly bad time to be understaffed as we enter into the coldest parts of the winter. With temperatures dipping into the teens tonight and light snow falling, the shelter is packed to capacity. Mattresses are strewn about and bodies shift on couches trying to stay warm under the dwindling amount of blankets. The community has come out in full force to help support the shelter but more is needed. In a great humanitarian effort, volunteers have come forth to help fill C.W.'s overnight shifts. It has taken twelve additional volunteers to take up the slack, but they cannot fill his shoes. The shelter is looking for donations of any sort to help ease the increased demand his loss and cold weather has brought with it. In particular short supplies are: socks, blankets, toiletries, and of course as always money. The House of Mercy is also looking for people with professional skills to help with a renovation that will happen this Saturday between 8 and 5. Additionally, anybody with any security skills would be particularly welcomed.
