INDEPENDENT CIVILIAN REVIEW OF
THE ROCHESTER POLICE DEPARTMENT
Because the police CANNOT police themselves!

Rally & March
Rally with us Tuesday, May 20, 2014, 6:00PM in front of Downtown United Presbyterian Church 121 N. Fitzhugh St. & then march to City Hall!

SPEAK AT CITY COUNCIL
Join us Tuesday, May 20, 2014, 6:30PM
City Council Chambers, Rochester City Hall,
30 Church Street

In order to "Speak to Council" you must call (585) 428-7421 before 5:30 p.m. of the Meeting
day. You will need to provide your name, address, the organization you are representing (if any), and the topic you plan to speak about (an independent civilian review board).

We need an independent civilian review board because:
•88% of our police force is male, 76% of it is white, and 93% of officers live outside the city limits; we have an occupying police force in Rochester comprised primarily of white men who target people of color and specific neighborhoods of color to mete out brutality, harassment in the form of Stop & Frisk, and other forms of misconduct •Mayor Lovely Warren sat as President of Rochester City Council from 2007 – 201 3, witnessed multiple speak-outs during City Council sessions regarding specific instances of police violence and neither said nor did anything publicly about those instances
•the problems that sparked the race riots/rebellion that happened in July of 1964—lack of quality housing, inequitable education, no or low wage jobs, and rampant police violence—have not changed in 50 years
•because the police cannot police themselves!

An independent civilian review board...:
•is a committee of civilians selected by the people that investigate claims of police misconduct in order to hold officers accountable for their actions
•conducts its own independent investigation of all claims outside of the purview of the RPD
•has subpoena power and draws conclusions based on that evidence outside the purview of the RPD
•turns its recommendations over to an impartial third party to make a final, public determination and any punitive outcomes for abusive officers.

For more information, contact Rev. Lewis Stewart at: 454-0077.

Account Creation Policy Change

Rochester Indymedia is now requiring editor approval for account creation.

We came to this decision after we had repeated spam posted to our website that caused difficulty with the website's functioning.  We will still have open publishing and keep our site as nonrestrictive and accessible as possible.

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact us.  As before, we will continue to be Rochester's grassroots news and education site.  Thank you for your continued support and remember, "Don't hate the media, be the media!"

Editorial Meeting Times / Locations

The Rochester Independent Media Center (R-IMC) is no longer meeting regularly.
We will set up meetings by necessity and appointment. Please contact us at rochesterindymedia@rocus.org.
Our home is still the Flying Squirrel Community Space at 285 Clarissa St. Occasionally, we hold meetings at RCTV located at 21 Gorham Street.
