  • “Family Trouble”: The 1975 Killing of Denise Hawkins and the Legacy of Deadly Force in the Rochester, NY Police Department

Denise Hawkins was killed by Rochester, NY police officer Michael Leach on November 11, 1975. The ripples caused by her death are heavy and tragic. The reform sparked by her death was deficient. As late as 2021, Hawkins’ name was still being called out on the streets and in court filings. But who is Denise Hawkins?

Second Installment of a Rochester Activist's Journal depicting his work with the International Solidarity Movement in Palestine.

I regret that I have been unable to write for what seems to be nearly 3 weeks. I have been in various villages throughout the Qalqilia district in the West Bank and finding an internet connection has been difficult. Either no connection exists or it is so slow that packing up and paying you all personal visits seems more productive.

Activists Demand the Release of Ansar Mahmood, An end to Racial Scapegoating

Dozens of activists seeking the release of Ansar Mahmood and other detainees rounded up in the so called “war on terrorism” rallied in front of the INS Federal Detention Facility in Batavia, NY Saturday afternoon. An ad hoc group consisting of Rochester peace activists, students, workers and youth organized the Rally. Mahmood’s case
exemplifies the attack on the human rights of innocent immigrants that has become standard under the Bush Administration’s “Patriot Act” legislation.

People with Disabilities demand apology from Democrat and Chronicle

Amidst the furor over remarks made by Bob Lonsberry, I was outraged to see the D&C use equally derogatory language in an article about the killing of a young man with a disability (Mom aids Death in France, 14A, September 27th). Without delving into the incredibly complicated debate over the man's right to die, I can say that when the D&C called him an "invalid" they insulted our entire community.

Rally to Free Ansar Mahmood, A Victim of the War on Terrorism

Ansar Mahmood has turned 25 and 26 in the INS Detention Center in Batavia. He was a legal, valid green-card holding Pakistani immigrant of the US. He settled in Hudson, NY, working 13-hour shifts as a Domino's pizza delivery boy, so he could send extra money back home to his family in Islamabad, Pakistan. His father was sick and they needed the extra money to pay for medicine.

ClearChannel urging violence against bicyclists

Clear Channel Communications radio stations in three cities (Cleveland, Houston, and Raleigh, NC) have recently broadcasted talk show hosts and listeners encouraging violence against bicyclists. Last week, Raleigh station G105 advocated violence against cyclists, with suggestions of how to run cyclists off the road, and urged listeners to call in with stories of harassing them.
One DJ joked of pelting cyclists with empty Yoo-Hoo bottles and said he would "love to be on a motorcycle and driving it down a bike lane. Because he didn't think bikers should be allowed on the road. He said they should ride on the sidewalk," according to a listener quoted in the Raleigh News Observer.
Tell Clear Channel to stop promoting violence against bicyclists.

The Lynching of Lonsberry

The Lynching of Lonsberry
Thought I disagreed with much of what Lonsberry had to say, there is something more disturbing about his forced exit. There is an obvious contradiction here that, in the current hot air over Lonsberry's racist flap, liberals should be uncomfortable with. Let me state ahead of time that the definition of "what is a liberal" is not clean just as the term "conservative" has different shades of meaning.
What we should be uncomfortable with is the firing of someone based on his/her speech or opinion.

Account Creation Policy Change

Rochester Indymedia is now requiring editor approval for account creation.

We came to this decision after we had repeated spam posted to our website that caused difficulty with the website's functioning.  We will still have open publishing and keep our site as nonrestrictive and accessible as possible.

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact us.  As before, we will continue to be Rochester's grassroots news and education site.  Thank you for your continued support and remember, "Don't hate the media, be the media!"

Editorial Meeting Times / Locations

The Rochester Independent Media Center (R-IMC) is no longer meeting regularly.
We will set up meetings by necessity and appointment. Please contact us at rochesterindymedia@rocus.org.
Our home is still the Flying Squirrel Community Space at 285 Clarissa St. Occasionally, we hold meetings at RCTV located at 21 Gorham Street.
