Tent City Reportback

On behalf of the College at Brockport’s Student Social Work Organization, fellow student Sue Dickinson and I organized Tent City this semester. Tent City is a campus event dedicated to bringing awareness to homelessness and how everyone is affected by this devastating epidemic. Sue, I and other volunteers spent the night on the main campus in tents and sleeping bags. A rally was held on April 14 at 6:00 p.m. at the flagpole—which was open to the public.

Local Family and Take Back the Land Announce Eviction Defense

Video of Friday's Press Conference:
http://blip.tv/file/4874588

A Press Conference was held Friday March 11, 2011 at 9 Ravenwood Ave, Rochester, NY 14619 where Catherine Lennon and her family of 11, including seven children announced they will stay in their home of 7 years.

After Catherine’s husband died of cancer, their mortgage lender and government bailout recipient, Countrywide refused to renegotiate the mortgage, sending the family’s house into foreclosure.

The Lennon Family will also announced a public protest, with support of Take Back the Land Rochester, on Monday 14, 2011 to nonviolently block the impending eviction of their family.

Video Reportback: Anti-Eviction Protest on S. Goodman Street!

Take Back the Land - Rochester called on the community to protest Fannie Mae's move to evict five people from a house in Rochester and render them homeless. Despite many attempts, the government-backed corporate bank has refused to negotiate with the tenants of 820 South Goodman Ave. Despite Fannie Mae's $90 billion bailout from the government to help keep people in their houses, Fannie Mae is still putting people out on the street.

This April 15-17 people from all walks of life will gather in Washington, D.C. to resist the spring meetings of the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund, the loans sharks of global capitalism. Both institutions are infamous for forcing poor countries in the global south to ruin their own economies in order to further enrich Western corporations.

Account Creation Policy Change

Rochester Indymedia is now requiring editor approval for account creation.

We came to this decision after we had repeated spam posted to our website that caused difficulty with the website's functioning.  We will still have open publishing and keep our site as nonrestrictive and accessible as possible.

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact us.  As before, we will continue to be Rochester's grassroots news and education site.  Thank you for your continued support and remember, "Don't hate the media, be the media!"

Editorial Meeting Times / Locations

The Rochester Independent Media Center (R-IMC) is no longer meeting regularly.
We will set up meetings by necessity and appointment. Please contact us at rochesterindymedia@rocus.org.
Our home is still the Flying Squirrel Community Space at 285 Clarissa St. Occasionally, we hold meetings at RCTV located at 21 Gorham Street.
