Since Hurricane Katrina, Community Labor United - a New Orleans based coalition dedicated to creating spaces for grassroots organizations to dialogue, strategize, and build collective work-- has been facilitating the development of a Peoples' Hurricane Relief Fund & Oversight Coalition. Due to the enormity of the task
ahead of us and the many different areas of work that need to be addressed, it has become clear that a national coalition must form to take on this project.

Although some level of incompetence in government is universally expected, it started accelerating towards its pinnacle in the US after the Supreme Court voted 5-4 to install Bush in the presidency.

Over and over, I have heard that America has the greatest health care system in the world. Politicians and pundits have repeatedly bragged about the high quality of medical care and medicine in our nation. I always believed the statements without question until recent years. Facts got in the way.

I went looking for the numbers behind the real situation. My grandfather Crockett often said, "Numbers never lies but liars use numbers." The real story told by the numbers is very disturbing.

Katrina has turned out to be the worst disaster in the recorded history of this nation. What’s most egregious is that it was predicted years earlier in books on climate change and the growing global warming crisis, as well as from local officials of the region who knew of the dangers and tried to get Federal assistance.

What becomes obvious when a Katrina comes along is that for the many "born to lead," there is only a scant few "committed to serve."
