Durand Eastman Park and the Lady In White

Durand-Eastman Park. So peaceful and picturesque. This time of year the autumn colors are brilliant. And the water is so calm and reflective; the landscape seems to gently float up into the sky. This could be heaven.

On the edge of one great Lake Ontario, two much smaller lakes, Durand and Eastman are named for the two men who donated the land for this beautiful park. In the early 1900′s Dr. Henry S. Durand owned a summer camp here. He and his friend George Eastman saw a need for a public park with access to the beach. So they bought a number of farms around the Durand property, and in 1907 they offered the land to the City of Rochester.

Lots of Food at the Squirrel

Submitted by Deborah Klee, Lots Of Food Guild Member on Thu, 2013-10-17 08:28

On the hottest of hot dog days in August, the Flying Squirrel Community Space on Clarissa Street hosted a planting party. Two dozen volunteers showed up, including University of Rochester students, Lots of Food Project Guild members and energetic neighbors. Pickaxes were swung and spades wielded. Compacted ground was broken. Log edgers were laid. Gallons of compost were sprinkled into newly formed garden beds. Paw paw trees (yes, the same tree mentioned in the childrens’ song is native to this area), strawberries, asparagus and herbs were planted.

Water, Water, Everywhere: To Frack or not to Frack

As the crowd surrounding the New York State Capitol building for the June 17th New York Crossroads Hydro Fracking Rally in Albany, NY grew in numbers so too did the volume level and diversity in backgrounds, professions and messages of attendees. The atmosphere and chants heard echoing throughout the Capitol square coalesced in one clear message: No to Hydraulic Fracturing in New York State, Yes to alternative energy technologies. The former message could be gathered by mere observance of the signs and symbolism illustrated by the crowd. The latter became more clear and cohesive as attendees and keynote speakers demonstrated the implications that “fracking” policy in New York State holds not only for the region and the nation but more pressingly for global water systems. Undoubtedly, the direction we take in terms of energy policy in the United States often sets longstanding precedents domestically and internationally.

Account Creation Policy Change

Rochester Indymedia is now requiring editor approval for account creation.

We came to this decision after we had repeated spam posted to our website that caused difficulty with the website's functioning.  We will still have open publishing and keep our site as nonrestrictive and accessible as possible.

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact us.  As before, we will continue to be Rochester's grassroots news and education site.  Thank you for your continued support and remember, "Don't hate the media, be the media!"

Editorial Meeting Times / Locations

The Rochester Independent Media Center (R-IMC) is no longer meeting regularly.
We will set up meetings by necessity and appointment. Please contact us at rochesterindymedia@rocus.org.
Our home is still the Flying Squirrel Community Space at 285 Clarissa St. Occasionally, we hold meetings at RCTV located at 21 Gorham Street.
