Indy TV #5: A Conversation with Disability Rights Activists

This week's Indy TV is a conversation with two Disability Rights activists; Anita Cameron, a systems advocate from the Center for Disability Rights and Mustafa Hayes, a self advocate who has received services through CDR. Both are members of the Rochester Chapter of ADAPT. CDR is part of a national network of independent living centers that has been operating in Rochester for the past decade. ADAPT is a national Grassroots Disability Rights group devoted to eliminating the institutional bias through direct action.

In our conversation, Anita Cameron outlined the many layers of advocacy tactics that she uses in her work. She explained when the direct action tactics that ADAPT has become famous for are deployed: "You always see the end results of what ADAPT is doing. It all starts with letter writing, meetings, things like that. Usually when the protests come in is when the powers that be or our 'targets' either refuse to meet with us or refuse to work with us. When that happens, its time to, as we say, hit the streets, get into the trenches."

Indy TV #3: Kym Clark on Drug Law Reform

On May 15th, a hearing was held by members of the NYS Assembly at Rochester City Hall to address need to reform the New York State draconian Rockafeller Drug Laws, with their infamous mandatory minimum sentences. Kym Clark, Director of FREE (Families Rally for Emancipation and Empowerment), travelled from Brooklyn to testify at the hearing. This week on Indy TV, the Barefoot Host interviews Kym about the impact the drug war has had on families, particularly low income and families of color, and the work being done to repeal these unjust drug laws.

Many candidates, corporate media obscures U.S. presidential politics

Third political parties do not compete on a level playing field in U.S. politics; the corporate media will spend more money in one day, promoting the campaigns of Senators John McCain, Barack Obama and Hilary Clinton, than the amount of money third political parties will spend in one year to promote their candidates, combined. While third party candidates are spending hundreds and thousands of dollars on flyers and brochures, big corporations are spending millions to keep the names of their candidates in the public’s view.

PARAGUAY.

Account Creation Policy Change

Rochester Indymedia is now requiring editor approval for account creation.

We came to this decision after we had repeated spam posted to our website that caused difficulty with the website's functioning.  We will still have open publishing and keep our site as nonrestrictive and accessible as possible.

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact us.  As before, we will continue to be Rochester's grassroots news and education site.  Thank you for your continued support and remember, "Don't hate the media, be the media!"

Editorial Meeting Times / Locations

The Rochester Independent Media Center (R-IMC) is no longer meeting regularly.
We will set up meetings by necessity and appointment. Please contact us at rochesterindymedia@rocus.org.
Our home is still the Flying Squirrel Community Space at 285 Clarissa St. Occasionally, we hold meetings at RCTV located at 21 Gorham Street.
