Submitted by ziwaooa on Wed, 2013-01-02 03:19

Instrumental in having pieced together, picture by picture, the cosmos, the Hubble telescope has, as it was revealed today, taken its most deepest view of the cosmos yet, discovering a number of new galaxies, some of which had been formed quite close to the Big Bang.

Led by a team from the California Institute of Technology and the University of Edinburgh, the new study had the Hubble Telescope study “redshifted” light, or light that emitted somewhere around 600 million years to 380 million years after the Big Bang.

House passes 'fiscal cliff' compromise

Submitted by ziwaooa on Wed, 2013-01-02 01:36

With the entire nation about to face higher taxes, including the middle class, the Republican House majority compromised Tuesday night and accepted President Obama’s plan for dealing temporarily with funding government. The rich would have been hit hard by the ending of tax cuts passed under President George Bush, even if the Senate-passed tax hikes were not approved.

Obama appeared to try to avoid gloating, but made it clear he felt he had kept his central campaign promise.

In a split decision Tuesday, the Illinois Supreme Court ordered that a preliminary injunction be lifted that had been granted to a state workers' union trying to keep some of the state's prisons open.

The decree clears the way for Governor Pat Quinn to close the high-security (Super-max) Tamms prison, in Alexander County; the state's largest women's prison in Dwight; juvenile detention centers in Murphysboro and Joliet; and three halfway houses for inmates nearing release dates.

Killer Apple Maps

Submitted by uegewao on Sun, 2012-12-30 03:30

It’s official: Apple Maps is so bad it could kill you.

According to Australian police, don’t use the application if you are driving around in the rural Southeastern Australian desert. Users can find themselves in a “life-threatening situation.”

The infamously glitchy application, recently included in Apple’s iOS 6 operating system update, has come under fire for leading many astray. But in Australia, the bad directions have landed several drivers in hot situations.
