The Senate’s proposed ‘fiscal cliff’ deal won approval of majority of the Congress late Tuesday evening and the bill is now ready to be signed into law by the President.

American justice! Federal court says prisoner must get kosher meals

Submitted by Roya James on Wed, 2013-01-02 03:31

The US Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that a Texas prison must provide free kosher meals for Orthodox Jewish inmate Max Moussazadeh.

Moussazadeh said that prison officials' refusal to provide him with a kosher diet violated the doctrine of the TorahTorah which states that the consumption of foods deemed unclean defiles the body and the soul. Under kosher requirements, foods must be prepared and handled in a strict and specific manner in order to be fit for consumption by adherents.

Likely presidential candidate votes against budget compromise; McConnell in trouble

Submitted by Roya James on Wed, 2013-01-02 03:30

US Senator Mark Rubio (R-Fla.) voted against the budget bill negotiated by Vice President Joe Biden and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.). It will earn Rubio much support among fiscal hawks and Tea Party Republicans who will play a major role in the 2016 presidential primaries. US Rep. Paul Ryan is in the predicament to be a team player and vote for the bill or risk losing support to Rubio in a future presidential matchup. In some ways, Rubio has already outmaneuvered Ryan.

House passes 'fiscal cliff' compromise

Submitted by Roya James on Wed, 2013-01-02 03:29

With the entire nation about to face higher taxes, including the middle class, the Republican House majority compromised Tuesday night and accepted President Obama’s plan for dealing temporarily with funding government. The rich would have been hit hard by the ending of tax cuts passed under President George Bush, even if the Senate-passed tax hikes were not approved.

Obama appeared to try to avoid gloating, but made it clear he felt he had kept his central campaign promise.
