Inequalities, Taxes, and More Inequalities

Submitted by Ann Robertson and Bill Leumer on Fri, 2012-08-03 22:37

Thanks to Occupy, most working people are well aware of the growing inequalities in wealth. But for those who lack the specifics, former Secretary of Labor Robert Reich provides a useful overview:
“…the rich have been getting a larger and larger portion of total income. From 9 percent in 1980, the top 1 percent's take increased to 23.5 percent by 2007. CEOs who in the 1970s took home 40 times the compensation of average workers now rake in 350 times.” (“Confessions of a Class Warrior,” August 22, 2010).

Pensions Under Attack

Submitted by Mark Vorpahl on Wed, 2012-07-18 21:07

On Friday, July 6, President Obama signed into law a bill that would renew transportation programs and extend low interest rates on student loans for one year. While this minimal gesture resulted in, no doubt, sighs of relief from those burdened by student debt, tucked away within the bill's pages was a little-noticed proposal to further erode the funding of workers' pensions. The bill was a brilliant sleight of hand where what it appeared to be giving with one hand distracted the public from what it was taking away with the other.

Money, Power, and Politics

Submitted by Ann Robertson and Bill Leumer on Wed, 2012-06-27 02:11

There has been much talk recently about the impact of money on politics, especially in the wake of the Citizens United ruling that has ratcheted up the role of corporate money in political campaigns. Organized labor was quick to blame this ruling for its defeat in Wisconsin. And many have assumed that the relation of money to politics is like a law of nature: the more money one has, the more political power one can wield.

May Day rally Rochester NY 2006

Submitted by AlBrundage on Wed, 2012-05-02 02:37

One of Rochester's most memorable May Days May 1 2006 as hundreds march from the Federal Building to St Michael's Church to protest raids and deportations, and also right wing hate radio.  Sadly due to the political and legal climate in 2012 a demonstration like this would not take place.

Oakland General Strike a Success, but Cops Seriously Injure another Vet

With over 50,000 people protesting in the street in three major protests through the course of the day, massive labor participation, and a shut down of the Port of Oakland, there is no question that the general strike was a success. Yet the corporate media is now blowing up the importance of a few acts of vandalism by protesters and agent provocateurs. This is a blatant attempt divert attention from a successful working class action.

U.S. Election 2012: U.S. Jobs Creation Only “Change” for Working People

“We aren’t making economic progress,” says Stewart Alexander, Presidential Candidate for the Socialist Party USA, “we are simply going through a long term process of replacing poorly paying jobs with even worse jobs while corporate profits soar. The only ‘change’ Obama has given us jingles in our pockets.”

U.S. Election 2012: Stewart Alexander Says Obama Represents the One Percent

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact us.  As before, we will continue to be Rochester's grassroots news and education site.  Thank you for your continued support and remember, "Don't hate the media, be the media!"

Editorial Meeting Times / Locations

The Rochester Independent Media Center (R-IMC) is no longer meeting regularly.
We will set up meetings by necessity and appointment. Please contact us at rochesterindymedia@rocus.org.
