Rochester Walks for Peace Week 2: Firsthand Accounts

This Saturday about 35-40 activists walked from Norton st. and Clinton ave. to Cafe Underground Railroad on W. Main st. as part of the second out of four walks for Rochester Walks for Peace. The march slowly winded its way through the city, with walkers stopping frequently along the way to engage local residents.

The aim of the march was to forge connections between the Anti-war community and communities in the city. The march was truly inspiring and well received.

Indy TV # 12: Interview with the directors of Shutdown

This week on Indy TV, the Barefoot host interviews filmmakers Helia Rasti and Jonathan Stribling-Uss about the movie Shutdown. The two activist-documentarians were in town in July to screen the movie. The event drew an enthusiastic crowd, and generated a lot of thought-provoking discussion.

From the movies website:

"SHUTDOWN documents a piece of the continuous struggle towards social justice. Using the March 20, 2003 occupation and disruption of the San Francisco Financial District as a case study, the film casts a thoughtful eye on one of the most successful actions of the current anti-war movement, facilitated by Direct Action to Stop the War (DASW). Created to gain insight, inspire, and draw lessons the movie tells the story of how social justice organizers and everyday people came together to plan and shut down the financial district of a major US city."

Rochester Air Show- Noise Pollution, Military Propaganda, and Imperialism in our city

Every year the Air Show comes to Rochester International airport, and every year- I'm so pissed off about it I'm moved to spend every waking moment getting the thing banned from our communities.

As I write, from my kitchen in the 19th ward, I can't hear myself think because the air force feels a need to show off its tax funded toys to the public.

What Will It Take to Defeat the War?

On June 28-29, an “Open National Antiwar Conference” was held in Cleveland, called by a newly minted National Assembly to End the Iraq War and Occupation. Over objections from the conference organizers, centrally Socialist Action, the assembly voted to change the name to include reference to the war on Afghanistan, and to emphasize the connection with U.S. backing for the Zionist occupation of Palestine. (The sponsors of the confab were so right-wing that they feared losing “unity” with Democratic Party supporters of Israel and the Afghanistan war!) What did not change at all was the popular-front character of the new outfit, tying it to the bourgeois parties despite the fig leaf of electoral “independence.” Making this utterly clear, it was decided not to call a national antiwar mobilization prior to the November elections explicitly in order to court those forces who wish to aid the Democrats (and therefore want to avoid making problems for the presumptive Democratic nominee, Barack Obama). Here is the leaflet issued by the Internationalist Group at the conference.
