The Rochester Free School will host an Open House on May 4, 2013 from 11:00 am – 3:00 pm at the First Universalist Church located at 150 Clinton Avenue, Rochester, NY 14607. This event is free and open to the public and focused on adults (primarily) teaching and learning a wide variety of subjects.
The Open House will provide the opportunity for the public to become familiar with the concept of free schooling as well as offer the option of becoming involved with the Rochester Free School.
This festive event will showcase Rochester Free School course offerings for the upcoming summer session and provide the opportunity for interested participants to sign up.
Free lunch and snacks provided by Rochester Food Not Bombs. Music and other creative activities will be offered.
The Rochester Free School is a group of adults organizing space for people interested in sharing skills and knowledge horizontally without the hierarchy or the institutional environment associated with formal education. The open and horizontal structure of the school is intended to encourage self-reliance, critical consciousness, and personal development, while fostering democracy through consensus decision making practices, mutual aid, and respect. We are all-volunteer and none of our courses have a monetary cost; the “free” in free school is not restricted to money and can refer to the free exercise of thought and experimentation with pedagogy.
