You have joined a distinguished group of artists whose work was not accepted by the Finger Lakes Exhibition. The original Salon des Refusés was presented in Paris in 1863, when the French Academy rejected 2800 pieces submitted for the annual Salon. The selection committee felt that the public needed to be shielded from the works of such “subversives” as Monet, Manet, Pissaro, Cezanne, Courbet and Whistler. Since the Academy dictated the tastes of most members of the art buying public, rejection threatened many artists with professional extinction. Fortunately the general public protested and Napoleon III (a kinder, gentler emperor than his uncle) listened and intervened. After he viewed the rejected works, he instructed the Academy to reconsider its selection. When it refused, Napoleon decreed that the rejected paintings be displayed in a separate exhibition - the first Salon des Refusés. This year in Rochester, you and your fellow artists whose work has been declined by the Finger Lakes Exhibition have the opportunity to join the 2007 Salon des Refusés. We are running the Salon for three reasons: 1) To give the public a wider view of what is happening in the art world in upstate New York, 2) To show that just because something has been declined by the Finger Lakes jurors does not mean that it is not excellent work, and 3) to assuage the hurt feelings of artists whose work has been declined. The Finger Lakes Exhibition is a Western New York tradition at Memorial Art Gallery. For over 100 years, in 61 exhibitions, local artists have turned out in great numbers to honor their own, and the Gallery that praises their work. The desire to participate always exceeds the space allotted, and artists who offer their work for jury scrutiny, do so at their own risk and expense. Memorial Art Gallery selects a new jury every time, and what is chosen is always thought provoking, reflecting the latest trend or a reaction to it. The resulting collection ranges from a delightful array of original work in every medium, to a lopsided mixture of personal taste. This year’s jurors are Mark Alice Durant, Professor of Visual Arts, and Sofia Hernandez Chong Cuy, Curator and Programs Manager at ART IN GENERAL, NYC. It would be nice to see more of what the jury saw... more of the artists we have admired for years, whose work escaped favor in this round… more of the odd or outrageous or tender. More will be offered by the Salon des Refusés. If you have work that was officially declined by the Finger Lakes Exhibit 2007, you are invited to be a part of the Salon. Salon des Refusés will open the same evening as the Finger Lakes Exhibition, and will be within two blocks from MAG. Don’t see the Finger Lakes Exhibition without seeing the Salon des Refusés. Celebrate the Finger Lakes Exhibition, and be part of that indefinable something it is missing…….
