Re: eye-witness account of alleged police brutality against Tyquan Rivera before shooting of officer as read over the air waves of 103.9FM WDKX
Re: eye-witness account of alleged police brutality against Tyquan Rivera before shooting of officer as read over the air waves of 103.9FM WDKX
1. Tyquan shot into the group of police as they were leaving the house (the police having found nothing happening there)
2. Tyquan did this after being brutalized by the police: punched, kicked repeatedly, and even thrown down a flight of stairs by one of the cops
3. that the young white cops, in particular, have no respect for members of Rochester's African American community
With all that has been reported by the corporate media about the shooting, none except this radio station, have bothered to talk to an eyewitness. Yet they have made multiple judgments about the character and guilt of the young man, basically trying and convicting him in the media.
Corporate media reinforcing the racist status quo in our city, coupled with the threat of random police brutality, seems to be suppressing the outrage of people living in Rochester's neighborhoods. Based on the eyewitness description of what actually happened before the shooting, it's surprising that the police don't get way more reprisals for their behavior than they do now.
Re: eye-witness account of alleged police brutality against Tyquan Rivera before shooting of officer as read over the air waves of 103.9FM WDKX
Now this doesn't mean that, to me, the police are off the hook if they did something wrong, but killing a police officer will not make things like police brutality go away.
Re: eye-witness account of alleged police brutality against Tyquan Rivera before shooting of officer as read over the air waves of 103.9FM WDKX
1) The so-called "mainstream" media is totally ignoring these aspects of the case. If we are to prevent things like this happening in the future, it's critical that we understand why it happened in this case. Sticking our heads in the sand and pretending like it was just a case of a poor parenting or something like that is unproductive to say the least.
2) The politicians seem to be following suit and saying that we should avoid talking about police brutality, racial profiling, and all the other reasons that people in the city don't trust police.
3) There are many degrees of murder, and one thing that should be taken into account is what circumstances lead up to it. What Tyquan did was wrong, but it is very different than shooting a cop in cold blood for no reason at all (which is basically how the media is spinning it).
