Anti-Racism Movement protests ESL, Bob Lonsberry

In response to WHAM’s continued denial of accountability and refusal to have Bob Lonsberry removed from their programming, Rochester’s Anti-Racism Movement (ARM) has begun a grassroots campaign to boycott all sponsors of the Bob Lonsberry show. On Saturday, June 26 ARM held the first of many visual demonstrations intended to do just that—to quite literally hit WHAM and its sponsors where it hurts: the bank.

ARM activists and community members alike showed up to the ESL Federal Credit Union on East Ridge Road to voice their disgust at the racist, sexist, and classist remarks Lonsberry had made on his June 10th show, and also to inform ESL members of where their dollars are being spent, and what they can do about it. “The organizers are asking that people request an end to ESL’s sponsorship of WHAM until Lonsberry is fired. They are encouraged to do this by signing petitions, writing letters, and especially expressing that opinion vocally to the bank tellers and managers,” said one activist.

Beyond participating in written and vocal complaints, members were encouraged to take a more direct approach by physically removing their money from their accounts and stating exactly why they were doing so. “It’s unfortunate that this institution values my investment over my words,” said one member, “but if it takes reducing my account to one dollar for my voice to be heard, I am willing to do that.” After completing this act, the member reported back to the group about the “buzz” occurring inside the bank regarding the protest.

Besides one ESL customer who was quoted shouting, “I love Bob Lonsberry; I think they (the women in the young mothers program) should keep their legs closed!” the reception of the demonstrators ranged from neutral to positive. By the time the bank closed at 1:30, all of ARM’s leaflets had been distributed to customers, and the general feeling among the participants was one of satisfaction and success.

When asked to comment on the day’s event, ARM organizer Myra Brown spoke very warmly and honestly about the responses she was given while talking to customers. “When people are faced with their favorite personality, or something they’ve accepted to be genuine, they tend to avoid knowing that those genuine personalities (for example ESL, Geico, and Advance Auto Parts) could in-fact fund hate speech, bigotry, and outright attacks on the children of our beloved communities. And it is this avoidance—this ambivalence—that holds people back from doing right and creating a world in which we all want to live. This ambivalence is what we are attempting to break down today.”

As Saturday’s event was only the first visual demonstration of a sentiment that has been building for months, opponents of racism, sexism, classism, and institutionalized oppression of all kinds are encouraged to get involved with the campaign however they can. Hey Tim-the story came out great.
I'm excited to see where we go from here with this movement to fire Lonsberry.

you've got to be kidding me

Re: Anti-Racism Movement protests ESL, Bob Lonsberry

I read the trancript from the Lonsberry program, and have no issue with what was said.
Why is pointing out that honoring girls that get pregnant over girls that graduate with honors a bad thing?

"Why is pointing out that honoring girls that get pregnant over girls that graduate with honors a bad thing?"

You've simplified what was said to downplay the issue. It's unfortunate, really. Please re-read if you really think that was the extent of his attack.

It is great that this stuff is on the internet. Lonsberrry has demonstrated himself to be a bully who selects victims who are helpless to defend themselves. This information should stay on the web forever and follow Lonsberry around, since he chooses to use his position and the size of his audience as a podium from which to insult and demean people.

It's great the people are using their first amendment rights to fight back against Bob Lonsberry. This is a battle of ideas.

Bob would NEVER have said those things about blue eyed blonde teen mothers in Salt Lake City if he knew he had to face their parents on Sunday. He's very selective about his victims. Keep up the good work.

Re: Anti-Racism Movement protests ESL, Bob Lonsberry

yup worked out real well for the like 6 or 7 people protesting.... he was off the air untill listeners boycotted the station and its advertizers untill he was let lose on the air again... ha ha ha looks like the several hundred thousand angry fans trumpped the less than 10 anti whatever they were... haha get a pulse on the real issues and go after the crooked people running the government and leave reporters alone for uncovering truth and reason in an entertaining way. F.U.B.O.

Re: Anti-Racism Movement protests ESL, Bob Lonsberry

i think a few of those people were just strolling by, you know for their court appointed communitty service, and just set down there bags and garbage poker things... took off the "county corrections dept" neon vests, and grabbed a sign from somebody who packed like, 50 extra cuz she thought more than just 10 people would come. and then endded up talking on camera and then callin all their home boys and tellin them to flip it to the news cuz, "they gonna bo on tv TONIGHT!"... does it look like those are the kids we want representing the majority?

Re: Re: Anti-Racism Movement protests ESL, Bob Lonsberry

It's pretty interesting that you choose the name "logic and reason", considering that neither of those things are present in your post. Instead we see pure racism with no attempt to even rationalize it.

Re: Anti-Racism Movement protests ESL, Bob Lonsberry

haha good one ben! oh just one thing though... did not say one thing about race... you people are so hyper sensitive, but wait you might think "you people" is racist too. but remember i dont know who or what you are so cnat really say anything there can ya? and guess what i would have said it if they were white, black, brown, or yellow. so your racist thing doesnt really hold water my friend. see i am a big believer in the idea that you should dress how you want people to treat you... when you dress like a thug i call you a thug... is that racist against certain types of dressers? you idiots just throw the word racist around like it was ted kennedy's "word of the day"... take it back a notch, cuz i dont bow down and kiss black peoples' butts doesnt make me racist... good now that that is all cleadred up!... i do have a few questions regarding your last sentance... mainly the last half,"with no attempt to even rationalize it." are you going on the record as saying,"racisim is acceptable only if rationized."? does that sound like something you want catching on... so please before you go throwing around ideas of acceptable racisim, perhaps you should sit on the side lines a little longer and just mentaly prepare for the big task of speaking with actual intelligent people. have a wonderfully day my friend.
