Arrests at Rochester Antiwar Demonstration

Seven activists arrested in the street after march downtown.

A crowd of a few hundred gathered at the liberty pole this evening to commemorate five years of war in Iraq. After listening to speakers, people marched down East Ave, staying mainly on sidewalks with police escorts, ending up outside the IRS building across from the Little Theater. A group of six took action, dragging a flag-draped coffin into the middle of the street, kneeling to pray over it.

Police handcuffed and removed the them, taking the six to the opposite side of the street, where they were eventually loaded into cars. The six who were arrested were: Kathy Castania, Mike Connelly, Harry Murray, Sister Grace Miller, Rita Lewis, and Eli Yewdall. In response, several protesters crossed the street. Some were reprimanded for being in the street. Some stayed in the street close to the curb and were never told to get on the sidewalk. Jake Allen was one who took steps into the street. He was grabbed by a police officer saying "Thats it! You're going too. Anyone else?" and walked across the street to be handcuffed and put into a patrol car.

This is one eyewitness account, with the names of those arrested confirmed by folks at the jail right now. More information will be posted as it becomes available. I believe that anyone who is interested is encouraged to go to the jail with musical instruments or food to be present in solidarity with those inside.

Hey Mike,

If you go to the Media Gallery on this page at

There are also so really good photos of the events on 3-19 on the RAW Media Gallery:

Re: Arrests at Rochester Antiwar Demonstration

I was slightly surprised to see the Rochester Police arrest someone not involved with formal Civil Disobedience. Jake was given no warning and was only attempting to cross the street when he was snatched up. When the police do random arrests like this, its important that the demonstrators stand together and demand that the person is released. We had enough people to perform an un-arrest, but this didn't happen because not many of us are versed in this tactic, and we weren't unified.
I was a bit disappointed to hear one of the rally speakers, come over while the random arrest was taking place and say "We are not here to argue with the police, this is a distraction from what is happening over there..[meaning where the speakers were- a hundred feet or so from the arrest]." Solidarity demands that we support those arrested.. defending the right to protest and the right to free speech is a central part of the anti-war/ anti-imperialist fight.

Solidarity my butt...

Solidarity my butt.. Rochester Indymedia has never believed in solidarity re: the Rochester Left.

I had all the same problems with the City using code enforcement and police misconduct as a political tool.

"I didn't speak up when they came for Mr. Stankevich because I wasn't a crazy faggot."

I can get the Southern Poverty Law Center to run two stories on me and highlight me in their "year in hate" report, but nothing from Rochester Indymedia (not that I really care... but still).

Re: Solidarity my butt...

Did someone honestly say they didn't stand behind you because they weren't a crazy faggot? Who?

Andrew, maybe I'm missing something-what happened originally that has made it so that you work so hard to get positive attention from Indymedia while at the same talking so poorly about Indymedia members, and seemingly therefore Indymedia itself. I would love to know exactly what has happened, and not a completely one sided story of it either, which is what I feel like I always get from you. Because it seems like it has to be something really bad for you to consistently act this way.

People in R-IMC editorial board aren't against you just to be against you, Andrew. What happened? And where does your own personal responsibility lie in it? What did other people do that you wish was done differently?

You seem to frequently mention that R-IMC publishes only stories about our friends, and then seemingly connect our friendship with individuals to Metrojustice. Well, Declaration of Peace is not a part of Metrojustice from what I understand. That aside, people go to what they feel like going to, and write stories about what they feel like writing stories about. You frequently write stories about yourself and your struggles and they are not taken down. It seems then that your problem is that people don't take time out of their day to go and research your struggles. Is that your actual problem? You seem to throw in arguments that Indymedia is not a community activist organization-which is a current problem but it doesn't have to continue to be one. It will hopefully eventually be a tool that community activists do use to communicate their issues, but not everything gets done at once. We can't find create a new site, work our regular jobs, take care of our kids, uphold relationships, open a community center, start a bike collective, run screenings, and motivate other people to spend their time writing articles after doing all the things they have to do with their day as well. It's a lot to take on.

We all have big visions, but every part of that vision can't happen at once. It would be great if it could, but on top of this project which is a part of all of our lives, we have a lot of other things to do. Your life was seemingly FHF, and you're feeling unfairly ousted from that organization, which may or may not in the end be true. That being said though, it's unfair to use an article written by the Southern Poverty Law Center as a way to back up your story because they clearly wrote it strictly from things that you'd sent them.

People in Indymedia don't choose to do that because, possibly, they have a history with you. So what is that history, according to you, that keeps everyone so seperate instead of being able to get along?

UPDATE!

So Kathy, Sister Grace, Eli, and Jake were all released on Wednesday night between 11:30pm and 12am. Mike, Harry, and Rita were released the following morning after their arraignment. Rita apparently lost her ID and was forced to spend the night, while Harry and Mike made a decision to not be bailed out and stay the night. Bail was $100 for each person and they were charged with disorderly conduct and/or blocking traffic.

Re: Arrests at Rochester Antiwar Demonstration

I noticed the front page shot, (Arrests) for this article was listed in the Media Gallery as "in the public domain", author listed as RAW, and provider listed as RMIC.

Wrong on all counts.

Re: Re: Arrests at Rochester Antiwar Demonstration

Hey there!

First of all, great photo. I found it in the public gallery on the Rochester Against War website and didn't see any authorship info. I apologize for using your work without your permission. I assumed (incorrectly) that since it was in the public gallery, it could be used by the public.

That being said, I'd be happy to take it down or leave it up and give you the credit you deserve.

If you would like to talk about this further, please email me at Knight0440 (at) yahoo.com.

Again, our apologies.

Respectfully yours,
