Free Bicycle Repair Collective Starting!

As some may know, there's been meetings going on every Tuesday for a new community meeting space that will be opening in Rochester. It will host Rochester Indymedia, as well as Food Not Bombs. We're hoping that people will feel compelled to start up new projects now that there will be a permanent space, and a neighborhood to base those projects in. Have you been dreaming up a wonderful idea, without certainty about where it could possibly happen?

There's a greatness to the Anti-War Crisis Center. A wonderful meeting space that has become a real hub for interesting activism. Possibly one of the only negative things that can be said about it is its impermanence. We're hoping that this new community space will have that sense of permanence to it.

I for one am getting excited and itchy about this new community space, and want to get a project started immediately. I want there to be something that can be interesting for neighborhood members as soon as the project begins, and I hope that a free bike repair shop can be one of the variety of projects that can do that.

The difference between this particular bike project and other free bike repair projects in Rochester is that this project will focus on teaching and learning about bikes. There will be a set of trained bike repair mechanics initially, but that knowledge will immediately be passed on to others who choose to participate. They instead of getting a 'free' bike will earn their bike: paying with their labor. Their labor will be that of a teacher; showing another person how to fix or make their bike.

If this project is of interest to you please come to the initial meeting being held Wednesday February 27th at 6:00pm. The meeting will be at my house-to get directions/address please email me at breezyroy (at) gmail.com

Thanks!

Briana

p.s. If you are part of a project that needs a permanent placement, please feel free to come to our community space meetings. They are at the Anti-War Crisis Center every other week, (February 19th, March 4th), and at St. Joe's House of Hospitality every other week, (402 South Avenue, February 26, March 11th). We are currently in the process of a city proposal for a building so our meetings are very nuts and bolts right now but we'd love to be in contact with people!
