Maine Voters Reject Same Sex Marriage; Rochester Activists Demonstrate

mane Protesters chanting “Hey Obama let mama marry mama” and “LGBT we demand equality” gathered in front of the Federal Building on November 4 to condemn actions in the nearby state of Maine. Earlier in the year, courts in Maine determined that marriage was a civil right under the state's constitution and extended that right to all couples. Those rights were then taken away by a close ballot referendum on November 3. The protest was organized by the Civil Rights Front and participants included the Gay Alliance, Pride At Work, International Socialist Organization and Students For A Democratic Society. Re: Maine Voters Reject Same Sex Marriage; Rochester Activists Demonstrate

I don't believe in marriage. And of course I am anti-homophobe. So what stance do you recommend I take on this issue?

Re: Re: Maine Voters Reject Same Sex Marriage; Rochester Activists Demonstrate

It's real simple - you don't believe in marriage for yourself, and that is a CHOICE you get to make. When we restrict other peoples' ability to choose what they want for their lives and their selves, we are infringing on their RIGHT to do so. So while you don't believe marriage to be a valuable institution, you respect the RIGHT of anyone who wants to marry to do so. No matter how you personally feel on the subject, you see the government restricting the RIGHT of others to partner and live as they choose for what it is - a blatant act of institutional discrimination, on par with segregation, DADT, restricting the vote to white male landowners, etc.

wow your tone is really hostile and condescending. you're yelling at me for asking a simple question.

this isn't about 'rights' - it's about assimilation.

Re: Re: Maine Voters Reject Same Sex Marriage; Rochester Activists Demonstrate

I had some personal conflicts myself photographing and writing about this event. Personally I think the Government should get out of the business of sanctioning what is essentially a religious rite completely. Anyone who wants to be recognized as a couple, go to City Hall and get a Civil Union. Then if you want, go to your religious institution and get married but legal rights are based on the Civil certificate. This is not a radical idea, it is being used in most of Europe and working well.

So why did I do this piece? Because what we have now is sanctioned second-class citizenship. That cannot be tolerated in a democratic society. In fact as long as it is, the society is not democratic by definition.

Re: Re: Re: Maine Voters Reject Same Sex Marriage; Rochester Activists Demonstrate

as long as we live in a capitalist society, all of the working class has 'second class' citizenship.

where did you get the idea that we live in a democratic socity? flatly absurd
