UR-SDS Occupies University of Rochester in Solidarity with People of Gaza

palis Students from the University of Rochester and members of the local Rochester community will be occupying the atrium of Goergen Hall on the River Campus of the University of Rochester (275 Hutchinson Road) today for peace and in solidarity with the people Gaza and in opposition to U.S. support for the Israeli occupation of the Palestinian territories and the recent atrocities in Gaza. The action, organized by U of R Students for a Democratic Society (UR-SDS), will begin on the afternoon of Friday, February 6 and will last until the University of Rochester administration meets the demands.

The student occupation will feature a number of informational and peaceful consciousness raising events such as public talks, teach-ins, and sit-ins. The action was inspired by a wave of student occupations that occurred in 16 universities in England (1, 2) following the Israeli assault on Gaza.

1. Divestment: We demand the University of Rochester to adopt the "UR-Peaceful Investing Initiative" which institutes a peaceful investment policy to the university's endowment which includes divestment from corporations that manufacturer weapons and profit from war. (For example, the U of R invests in General Dynamics which manufactures weapons to maintain a 41-year occupation of the Palestinian territories and wars which slaughter Palestinian civilians by the 100s)
2. Humanitarian aid: We demand that the University of Rochester commit to a day of fundraising for humanitarian aid in Gaza within the next two weeks, as part of an ongoing commitment to provide financial support for the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
3. Academic aid: We demand that the University of Rochester twin with the devastated Gaza University and provide the necessary academic aid (e.g., recycled computers, books, etc.).
4. Scholarships: We demand that the University of Rochester grant a minimum of five scholarships to Palestinian students every year.

IMC UK: Over a dozen university occupations for Palestine

Over a dozen university occupations for Palestine
www.indymedia.org.uk/en/2009/01/419762.html

5:00 pm -About 50 students there now at sit in

Caller from the scene reports:

About 50 student there now. Sit in has begun. All is peaceful. Admin is just talking with students at this point about student's list of demands.

Students are prepared to resist extraction by non-violent means should it could to that. No problems with police at this time.

Re: UR-SDS Occupies University of Rochester in Solidarity with People of Gaza

Bravo! You are an inspiration to others. Your demands are excellent. Given the history of U of Rochester divesting from the Sudan, what are there arguments for not divesting from companies that help Israel maintain an illegal occupation?

thanks.

Re: UR-SDS Occupies University of Rochester in Solidarity with People of Gaza

Update from the scene:

The University plans to close the building at midnight. We plan to organize and mobilize until our demands are met! Join us at 11p.m. at Goergen Hall to show the University we are serious about supporting our brothers and sisters in Gaza!!!

Bring everyone you know!

Brian L.

9:30 pm – Unconfirmed Rumors of Possible Police Action at Midnight

Caller from the scene reports rumors of police attempt to remove any non-students from the sit in. Caller says police move could come at midnight tonight. Rumor is unconfirmed and considered hearsay at this point.

Caller reports about 50 people still there and committed to staying until all demands are granted.

You go guys! Solidarity form the University of Nottingham!

Update on U of R Occupation

If you haven't heard, the occupation ended at midnight, Friday night , before any confrontation actually went down. A group of three students acted as representatives of the group and entered negotiations with the Dean of Students at 10pm. After some debate, the larger group got together and amended the list of demands; the Dean came in at about 11:45pm, and agreed to them.

Ryan of U-R SDS was going to be sending out the details tonight, but haven't received anything as of yet.

One thing that is known is that there WILL be an open forum hosted by the U of R to discuss investment questions with the involved parties in the administration....basically to call them on their shit and head up a divestment campaign.

Yikes! To think that kids who don't understand that they are supporting the extremist right wing/KKK Nazi Party in America is really frightening - Hamas IS ULTRA RIGHT WING ZERO RIGHTS FOR LGBT, WYMIN, GREEN, PEACNICS. Educate yourself, you are looking, and acting, a lot like Nazi Youth - following without doing your homework!!!!

Re: UR-SDS Occupies University of Rochester in Solidarity with People of Gaza

New "divestment campaign"? You didn't learn very much from the one in 2002, did you. That one sank without a trace. Remember? Or was that before your time, so you're going to repeat their mistakes, and fail the same way?

Re: UR-SDS Occupies University of Rochester in Solidarity with People of Gaza

Is everyone in Gaza a member of Hamas? Does their conservatism still make it okay for Israel to carpet bomb them and kill over 400 Palestinian children in the recent month-long attack on Gaza?

If Palestinians in Gaza weren't members of Hamas before, they will definitely be joining up now after the bombing. Israel will have succeeded in creating whole new generations of enemies.

Re: Re: UR-SDS Occupies University of Rochester in Solidarity with People of Gaza

"their conservatism"

Yes, folks, that's the word for Hamas - "conservative."

Congratulations - you have won the Goddamned Clueless Euphemism of the Day award.

Re: Re: UR-SDS Occupies University of Rochester in Solidarity with People of Gaza

"If Palestinians in Gaza weren't members of Hamas before, they will definitely be joining up now after the bombing."

Actually, the polling shows that Hamas has taken a steep hit in popularity in Gaza.

Re: Re: Re: UR-SDS Occupies University of Rochester in Solidarity with People of Gaza

How could anyone get into Gaza to take a poll? Those people don't have anything. Poll or no poll, no matter how you view this, Israel just comes out looking horrible.

Locking people into a ghetto and then decimating them, like Israel has done with Gaza, is like the Nazis in Poland. The shape of this genocide is eerily reminiscent of Warsaw during the German occupation in WWII. It's amazing to think that these parallels are lost on people who had friends and family in the Holocaust.

Conservative Judaism has many similarities to the attitudes that conservative Muslims have towards women, gays, and so forth. Their beliefs wouldn't serve as a rationale for attacking them either.

Re: UR-SDS Occupies University of Rochester in Solidarity with People of Gaza

Let's not forget that both sides have lost many lives, and that Israel has every right to respond to attacks on its citizens launched from its own territory. I'd like to know whose laws make this an illegal occupation, and what makes Hamas, an extremist group that doesn't recognize Israel's right to exist at all, better than the legitimate government of a state under attack.

Re: Re: UR-SDS Occupies University of Rochester in Solidarity with People of Gaza

Well, in terms of law, international law such as the united nations charter that the us and israel have both signed onto and both have rejected/vetoed numerous resolutions attempting to hold israel and the us to international law. You could also look at the universal declaration of human rights.

Re: Re: UR-SDS Occupies University of Rochester in Solidarity with People of Gaza

Seems like that first sentence is leaving quite a bit out.

Yes both sides have lost many lives, however the lives lost on the Palestinian side are many times that of the Israeli side.

Yes Israel has a right to respond to attacks. However, does it have a right to respond by inflicting collective punishment on a civilian population?

By the way, that is one case of a violation of international law. Palestinians are very clearly "protected persons" under the Geneva Convention. (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fourth_Geneva_Convention). There are many other cases as well.

Your last question is an important one. Personally, I don't support the Hamas government, my solidarity is with the people in Palestine and Israel working for peace in spite of their governments. However, non-support of Hamas doesn't mean that I then support whatever action the Israeli government takes. Also, it makes much more sense for people in the US to discuss Israel's actions when we are funding with billions of dollars.

Re: UR-SDS Occupies University of Rochester in Solidarity with People of Gaza

I would say many in the Israeli government have been committed to the destruction of Palestinian society. They have created laws to keep Palestinians impoverished in overcrowded getos to insure that Palestinians suffer from despair and lose there will to live.

Re: UR-SDS Occupies University of Rochester in Solidarity with People of Gaza

There has been some defacing of some of the advertisements. I wrote about it here:

riseuprochester.org/2009/02/11/hate-in-the-tunnel-at-the-university-of-rochester/

Re: UR-SDS Occupies University of Rochester in Solidarity with People of Gaza

"I would say many in the Israeli government have been committed to the destruction of Palestinian society."

Actually, the first thing Israel did was set up mobile vaccination clinics in the West Bank and Gaza. The life expectancy of palestinians in 1948 was 48- by the time Israel left, it was 72. this was accomplished largely by wiping out childhood diseases, but also by improved health care (Israel built 177 medical clinics and a sewage treatment plant in Gaza during their brutal genocidal reign. They also built a soccer stadium)
So I'd say you were wrong.

They have created laws to keep Palestinians impoverished in overcrowded getos to insure that Palestinians suffer from despair and lose there will to live.

So, if that were true, you'd be able to show me those laws, wouldn't you?
Actually, the palestinians are kept in such dismal condition by UNRWA, which refuses to allow them to exist as anything other than refugees.

The University of Nottingham would like to thank the University of Rochester. Wish more American students would have the courage (and will).
